  10. contracts worth  $190,000,000.00
  11. for 50,000  FSVS  (Future  Voice
  12. Secure      System)      STU-III
  13. telephones. The  phones  provide
  14. digital  voice   encryption   so
  15. anyone  else  listening  on  the
  16. line hears 'mumbo jumbo' instead
  17. of your conversation!

  19. (1)....3M Canada of London, Ont.
  20. now    offers    VDL     (Vision
  21. Development Language) with a  PC
  22. (or  compatible)  Vision  System
  23. which includes cameras, monitors
  24. and computers. The system adds a
  25. 68020 or 68030  coprocessor,  an
  26. image digitizer/framestore board
  27. and the VDL to allow the  PC  to
  28. be  used   to   do   inspection,
  29. process   control   or   quality
  30. checking.

  32. (1)....Infotron Canada sells the
  33. NX4600   high-capacity   network
  34. exchange that supports up to  96
  35. high speed links per node or  as
  36. many as 4000 local channels. The
  37. exchange allows up to 64  NX4600
  38. nodes to interconnect  within  a
  39. single integrated network.

  41. (1)....Air     Canada      spent
  42. $10,000,000.00  to  purchase   a
  43. Honeywell Bull DPS-90  mainframe
  44. computer  system   to   maintain
  45. records       on        aircraft
  46. serviceability  and  parts  from
  47. over 1000 terminals worldwide.

  49. (1)....ORACLE  (On-line  Records
  50. Access    Computer    for    Law
  51. Enforcement)   is   coming    to
  52. St.Catharines area. Running on 2
  53. DEC  VAX  8250  computers,   the
  54. software  will  interface   with
  55. CPIC      (Canadian       Police
  56. Information Centre) and by  1988
  57. provide computer aided  dispatch
  58. and direct voice-entry!

  60. (1)....Union  Gas  has  retained
  61. Utility   Graphics   Consultants
  62. (UGC) of Mississauga  to  locate
  63. an   automated    mapping    and
  64. facilities  management   system.
  65. It'll have to cope with  500,000
  66. customers in a 12,500sq.mi. area
  67. and over 10,000mi. of pipeline!

  70. national best  seller  list  for
  71. software   again   this   month.
  72. Second  place  went   to   1-2-3
  73. (again), third to  WORD  (again)
  74. and  fourth  to   WORD   PERFECT

  77. (1)....Terence Ram, former owner
  78. of  a  Toronto  software  retail
  79. store was sentenced to 5  months
  80. in prison  for  selling  illegal
  81. copies  of  software.  This   is
  82. believed to be  the  first  jail
  83. term  accompanying  a   software
  84. piracy conviction in Canada.

  86. (1)....IBM    and    NEC    have
  87. announced 4Mb  RAM  chips.  They
  88. can store  about  400  pages  of
  89. double spaced  typewritten  text
  90. in each one!  Volume  production
  91. is  expected  by  1991.  In  the
  92. design stage now,  both  at  IBM
  93. and in Japan, are the  16Mb  RAM
  94. devices!

  99. their  new  3.3,  6.6  and  12Mb
  100. flexible media disk drives using
  101. Verbatim media. Not bad  storage

  104. (1)....Tandon's   new   PORTABLE
  105. 30Mb 3.5in.  hard  disk  (called
  106. Personal Data Pac)  attaches  to
  107. your PC by  shielded  cable.  It
  108. weighs   2.5lb   and    measures
  109. 7"X4.75" by 2.5in.  Tandon  says
  110. you can drop, shake or  jolt  it
  111. without harming the mechanism or
  112. the media!

  114. (1)....Prime   Computer's    new
  115. supermini, the 6350 runs at 11.8
  116. Million Instructions Per  Second
  117. (MIPS)! Its main memory capacity
  118. is 64Mb and it can support up to
  119. 64 disk  drives  with  770Mb  of
  120. storage     on      EACH!      A
  121. dual-processor   version,    the
  122. 6550, is said  to  run  at  21.8
  123. MIPS!

  125. (1)....Zykor    Technology    of
  126. Toronto will sell you their  ANO
  127. 386 PC for under $4000.00! It is
  128. said to be 4 times  faster  than
  129. the  IBM  PC/AT  but  completely
  130. hardware      and       software
  131. compatible. Check it out at  ANO
  132. Automation in Markham.

  134. (1).... Image Management Systems
  135. Inc. of Calgary has  the  Office
  136. Archiver 2000 for your  WANG  VS
  137. system.   The   system    allows
  138. storage    of    up    to    1Gb
  139. (1,000,000,000 bytes) of data on
  140. a  single  optical   disk.   The
  141. device is a Write Once Read Many
  142. (WORM) drive that uses removable
  143. platters (like your CD records).

  147. (1)....PARYS is a  new  software
  148. family from  BELL  CANADA  (yep,
  149. the    'phone    people     sell
  150. software!).     It     is     an
  151. expert-system based product that
  152. automates    a     number     of
  153. administrative tasks,  including
  154. assessing               employee
  155. qualifications and  performance.
  156. Operating   systems    supported
  157. include MS-DOS,  concurrent  DOS
  158. and   most    UNIX.    Computers
  159. (minimum 512K  RAM,  10Mb  disk)
  160. supported   include    PC/XT/AT,
  161. Apricot and Wang.
